CB's The Sunless Citadel v3.5

Although sorry that Korgrave has decided that he needs to leave, Karl is distracted at the moment and glares up at the top of the pit.

"Shh!"

He listens more carefully to the sounds emanating from beneath him, and looks for a source.

When Karl shushes Korgrave and then falls silent, the sounds grow more frantic and seem to be coming from underneath the odd-looking flagstone on the pit's bottom.

Karl glares curiosly at the flagstones and slowly draws his sword as he continues to search the pit bottom for any sign of a trap door, or moveable stone that would allow him access to whatever lay beneath him. Goblins liked to dig tunnels, right?

Judging by the rough mortar on the one flagstone, it looks that this particular stone is moveable. Bits of crumbled mortar and a chink in the stone itself indicate that the large flagstone may be a covering to another sort of hole or tunnel. Karl's pretty sure that if he or someone else strong could get a proper grip on the stone, it could be slid aside.

Karl kneels down next to the loose stone and stares at it thoughtfully for a moment. He brushes away at the mortar with his hands, blowing in the crack around the stone. As he examines the joint, he checks for any signs of traps.

If he doesn't find any, he fishes in his pack for a moment, retrieving one last tool of his trade. The fine picks forgotten for the moment, he pulls forth a crowbar and sets to work on the stone.

Then crowbar, which should hopefully help him get leverage. +2 to the strength check, +6 total.[/sblock]

Karl gets his crowbar wedged into the mortar well enough but when he goes to maneuver the crowbar just another fraction of an inch into the hole to lever the stone upward all the better, the darned flagstone chips off. While there's now a hole large enough to peer into for Karl, he wasn't able to budge the stone. Just inside the hole, however, Karl catches sight of the creature making the cry for help. An elven woman is bound and gagged inside a shallow dugout at the bottom of the pit. Leaving off trying to delicately wedge the flagstone floor and make a "proper" job of it, Karl gets down and shoves the crowbar into the hole and heaves. Straining at the job, in time Karl shoves the heavy stone aside far enough to be able to pull the woman out, but she'll probably suffer a few scrapes in the process.

From up top, it looks like Karl could use some help. He wasn't able to pull the stone out enough to simply lift up the elf inside, so someone to either help him shove the stone aside more or to help him pull out the elf would do. Karl can do it by himself, of course, but it'll take more time.

Korgrave nudges Grotz. "Here, give me the end of the rope you've got. I'll hold it for you if you want to go down in there to help him."

Karl peers into the darkness, giving a curious look to the thing bound inside. He strains against the bar for a moment, then relaxes his efforts, aiming for now just to keep the stone from slipping back. He looks up to Grotz and nods.

"Safe now. Lend a hand."
