CB's The Sunless Citadel v3.5

Karl rounds the corner to the left and sees another ten foot stretch of stone hallway that ends in a closed wooden door. Carved in the wide stone lintel above the door is a symbol of some sort about five inches in diameter.

While Karl glides ahead just a bit, Kaeleen holds the torch out to Grotzkoshter and Elyan. "I know you see with your ears and heart, Elyan, but surely you must still enjoy the heat of a fire. Have either of you flint and steel, and perhaps oil with which to light this torch?"

Having already been burnt, the torch proves to be more difficult than normal to light but on the fourth strike with the flint and steel, Elyan manages enough sparks that the torch ignites. Thin wavering orange firelight soon illuminates the stone hall, sending a flurry of shadows to dance and play across the walls and ceiling. Kaeleen smiles gracefully. "Thank you, Elyan. That is better. No doubt your animal is also grateful for the light. Or does he see in the dark?"

There are three other half-burnt torches ensconced in the wall in this hallway if anyone is interested. They will each burn two hours.

Elyan smiles again in response to the smile he hears in Kaeleen's voice.

"No, my Rogue is as blind as I am in the dark - but he has learned to put up with my idiosyncracies. Still, some light to see by makes it easier for him, as well as for you, so I'm glad we found the torch. Are there any others here?"

Karl fishes the remaining torches down for Elyan, but having no need of them himself, he leaves them in the capable hands of those who can't see in the dark.

"Here."

With the surface dwellers eyes provided for, he continues his investigation of the hallway. He beckons for the others to follow as he moves to the corner.

"Another door."

His eyes check over the floors before he steps on them, and he moves slowly and deliberately towards the door. The constant paranoia of checking each doorway for kobold or goblin traps was wearing on him, but better to be alive and irritated than dead. He performs his standard checks for traps, sounds, or anything else of interest.

After handing over the torches, Karl steps around the corner to more closely examine the door. In about two seconds flat, Karl spies a trap in the five-inch diameter symbol engraving in the door's lintel. It looks like a cloud of poison gas will shoot out of the symbol if someone messes with the door. Karl sets about carefully finessing the symbol and the lock on the door so as to disable the trap to be able to gain entry to the room beyond.

While Karl works on the door, Grotzkoshter hears a scuffling coming from the north end of the hallway, near the bend. Rogue's ears prick forward at that same moment, just in time to see a hidden door open and four goblins armed with saps and short swords step through.

Karl, Elyan, and Kaeleen are flat-footed. Grotzkoshter and Rogue heard the goblins before the secret door opened and are not flat-footed.

Surprise round initiative:
Rogue
Grotzkoshter
Goblins

Before Elyan can subdue him, Rogue lunges forward and, with a loud snarl, lays into the first goblin. The dog's jaws clack on the goblin's leather and with a rip, Rogue tears through the creature's armor into flesh, dealing 5 points of damage. The goblin drops the sap it was holding and fumbles backward through its companions, trying to get away from the fierce dog. Rogue snaps at the goblin again as it flees in peril, dealing another 6 points of damage and felling it outright. The first goblin, dead or dying now, lands backward with a thud just beyond the secret door.

Grotzkoshter

Filthy slave!
Grotzkoshter calls to the goblin and shouts to Meepo
Grab your spear and nail them.
He then swings his greataxe and tries to slam it on the nearest goblin.

Greataxe [1d20+7, 1d12+5, crit x3, 12 lb, two-handed, slashing] / Cleave if needed.

Even with Meepo tied on a leash to a length of rope that has its terminus tied around Grotz's waist, Grotzkoshter is excited enough at the prospect of slaying goblins that he whips his greataxe with resounding vehemence through the air and splays the weapon into the second goblin through the door. The air shrieks along the sharp edge of the massive axe's blade as Grotz swings and lands a critical blow that deals 17 points of damage to the second goblin. The goblin's arm is severed and, thrust backward by the blow from the greataxe, ends up smeared as a paste of bone and flesh on the far wall. Grotz's martial instincts kick in and Meepo ducks as the half-orc's greataxe whistles a second time through the air in an arc aimed for the third goblin. Grotzkoshter pastes the third goblin with a masterful stroke that deals 18 points to the woeful creature, killing it immediately. Meepo pales and faints.

The fourth goblin inside the secreted hallway jumps out and, seeing one fallen and two utterly desecrated allies lying prone in the hall and doorway in the span of six seconds, turns and flees from whence it came. Rogue snaps at the creature but misses as it runs away.

Initiative:
Kaeleen
Elyan
Rogue
Karl
Grotzkoshter
Goblin

That was two natural 20s in a row on Grotz's attacks.

Karl whirls at the sound of the goblin's arrival Grotz's subsequant attack. With nary a pause to try and figure out why he didn't get an initiative roll, he draws his blade and moves to try and catch the fleeing goblin before it can alert it's comrades.

"Catch him."

Kaeleen : Elven Cleric of Corellon Larethian

Kaeleen, seeing the final goblin flee, rushes foward and after it, holding her torch before her as she moves.

OOC: Double move through the doorway after the goblin.
