With the door closed, Karl hastily re-locks it. A minute later, the wardrum grows very loud and the gobbledy-gook of goblin voices can be heard nattering in the room with the half-wall and fire pit. Karl, Grotz, Kaeleen, and Elyan tightly grasp their weapons and tense for the door to open, but it never does. Rogue bristles as a hobgoblin outside the door barks something quite loudly, then the entire war party evidently turns and trudges back the way they came, their drum quiet this time.
Several long minutes later, when things have again grown quiet, Karl is the first to speak. "Well, that was close. I'll try the door at the end of the hall." Karl sets about searching the floor of the hall and, ten feet before the door at the end of the hall, comes to an abrupt stop with a low whistle. "Found something, alright. Looks like another trap." Pushing at a bit of stone, Karl wedges a loose flagstone into a crevice so that the flagstone stands upright. "Don't trip on that tile." Pointing to a 10-foot square section in front of the door at the end, Karl says, "There's a pit trap just there. I've wedged that stone in so that it should keep the floor steady. We can cross, I think."
The door on the other side is locked. Taking two attempts to pick the lock, Karl at last opens the bolt securing the door. Opening the door itself, reveals an oddity of a room beyond. Mounted and stuffed animal heads adorn the walls. The mounting job is sloppy, and the assortment of heads includes cattle, rats, and other not particularly impressive specimens. A few gristly trophies do, however, share the wall with the rest of the animals: six kobold heads and one hobgoblin head are mounted along the southern walls, mute victims of some sort of rampage. A rusted iron spike stands askew in the center of the room, trialing a broken chain. Thin patches of ice coat sections of the walls and floor, and the air inside the room accosts the group with its cold frost.
Just a few steps into the room, a small winged creature with white scales, a beaked nose, spiny dewlaps, and a small white crest supported by a single, back-curving spine rises from behind a pile of debris in the room. The miniature dragon's scales glisten like snow in the deep of winter. Meepo has time to squeak out, "Calcryx!" just once in Draconic before a cone of cold evelopes the group.
Karl, Kaeleen, and Elyan react on instinct (Elyan hearing the wings flap and heeding Meepo's brief warning) and dodge the dragon's cold blast, taking only 2 points of cold damage each. Grotzkoshter and Meepo, however, are caught by surprise and covered in the small dragon's frosty breath, and take 4 points of damage each. Meepo keels over, covered in a blanket of thick hoary frost.
The dragon alights on the floor in front of Grotz, its talons out, and hisses.
Surprise round over.
