For the last couple of years, I've held a poll to find out what the most anticipated games of the coming year are; and that time has rolled around again! First of all, I need nominations, though. Please let me know in the comments what your most anticipated full roleplaying game of 2017 is! Remember that's full (tabletop) roleplaying games - not supplements, adventures, settings, sourcebooks, and so on. The game must have a currently scheduled release date in 2017.
New to TRAILseeker patrons! Carl Cramér introduces way to introduce automatons to different Pathfinder classes - automaton familiars, automaton companions, plus the new Clockwork Knight ranger archetype. Illustrated by Ellis Goodson.
Darry posted an excellent News Digest Year In Review 2016 the other day, which takes a look at some of the biggest news stories of the year. I thought it would be fun to look at what were the most popular news items here on EN World over the last twelve months. Listed were the 50 most popular tabletop RPG news items on EN World of 2016. It's interesting to see that 27 of them - just over half - were about D&D 5th Edition specifically. The top item was my original scoop about Curse of Strahd, which shows that folks still come to the EN World for the rumours - which is, of course, how the site started.
In our final EN5ider item of the month - and, indeed, the year - we introduce three themed fey NPCs. Grimollo the Voice Thief will steal your very words; Missus Silverbeak is a giant talking fairy owl; and Snowblind is the Knight of the Winter Wastes. By James Haek; illustrated by EIlis Goodson and Egil Thompson. Happy New Year, everybody, and let's have a great 2017 for EN5ider!
[UPDATED!] Sandy Petersen, author of Call of Cthulhu, is suing PayPal. He claims that PayPal has withheld over $57,000 raised via Kickstarter for a (video game) project in 2013. You can read the full 8-page filing here. "To date, however, defendants wrongfully refuse to release the funds that plaintiff’s customers attempted to pay and/or pledge to plaintiff, despite the fact that plaintiff has already sent the purchased/requested productions to many of these customers. In fact, defendants have acknowledged in writing that the records plaintiff provided show the plaintiff has fulfilled purchase orders of PayPal customers in the amount of at least $22,675.00. Defendants still refuse, however, to release even these funds." The case was filed in Dallas, Texas.
If you feel the need for some D&D 5th Edition stats for Santa Claus, I've got you covered. Well, not me so much, but the folks listed below have. I've found five different versions of Santa in D&D 5th Edition statistics - as a bard, a wizard, even a dwarf paladin!
It's Christmas! I hope everybody has a wonderful time. There won't likely be much news over the festive period, but I wanted to offer a free gift to those who are kind enough to swing by EN World over Christmas. If you're a fan of science fiction or fantasy RPGs which aren't D&D, I have attached PDFs of the character creation sections of both N.E.W. and O.L.D. from the WOIN (What's OLD is NEW) roleplaying game system - a lifepath based d6 system which enables you to create a wide variety of characters, and mix and match different genres as you wish. These will only be here over the Christmas period, so grab 'em quick! And if you create a character, post it in the comments. I'll send a hardcover of the full NEW game to my favourite.
If you're like me, you probably thought that Fantasy Grounds and d20 Pro (both virtual tabletops) already had official Pathfinder content. Fantasy Grounds already has official D&D content, and other games. Apparently that was not the case, as Paizo has just announced that Pathfinder is now on both. Roll20, probably the world's largest VTT, is notably absent, but perhaps that's coming? "Paizo Inc., publisher of the award-winning Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, announces today agreements with Mesa Mundi Inc. and SmiteWorks to deliver official Pathfinder RPG content to millions of gamers through their leading virtual tabletops, D20PRO and Fantasy Grounds, respectively." Anyhow, here's the full announcement.
New on EN5ider, the 5E magazine! In this festive adventure for 3rd-5th level characters, the PCs must recover Revelleschafter's seasonal gifts from the goblins who raided the town on the eve of All's Giving Day. Fun as a one-shot or as part of an ongoing camapign. This adventure also includes four new goblin types - a variant nilbog, a yobbo, a goblin concubine, and the goblin king - and a random table for goblin poison effects. By Kiel Chenier; illustrated by Ellis Goodson. Become a patron now to get this and over a hundred other supplements and adventures!
Mike Shea, otherwise known as Sly Flourish, held a survey over recent months to look at how Dungeons & Dragons DMs prepare and run their games. The results have now been released, and they make for some interesting reading. For example, most people play weekly for about four hours (as expected) with about an hour to two-hours preparation time. Over half play at home, about 10% in public, and about 20% play online. Over half use their own settings, 38% play in the Realms, and 5% in other D&D settings. Two thirds run their own adventures, with one third running published adventures. Check out Mike's full report (it's long!) for all the data!
The new issue of Dragon+ is here. "Join us for a holiday and crafting special as we roll up our sleeves for a D&DIY extravaganza, showcasing some of the best arts, crafts, and DIY projects inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. We also have an exclusive look at the new Aberrations and Undead deck expansion for Tyrants of the Underdark with Gale Force Nine’s John-Paul Brisigotti, and some special...
New on EONS, the official WOIN magazine - EONS #33: Trailblazer 9 Heavy. The Trailblazer Heavy vessels are over a hundred years old and were designed to cut routes through the nightmarish hazards that fill the space of the Cauldron. When TB9H becomes a runaway train headed straight for the planet of Diana, can the PCs figure out what is going on and stop the ship before distaster strikes? By Alasdair Stuart; art by Sade, Ellis Goodson, Darren Morrissey, and Indi Martin.
A selection of unique magical items tailored to martially-inclined 5th Edition characters! The Barbarian's Greataxe, Monk's Staff, Paladin's Shield, Ranger's Longbow, and more are granted via the new Signature Regalia feat. Nine items in total for the warriors in your party! By Mike Myler; illustrated by Sade. Now on EN5ider!
Cubicle 7 has shared the cover of the upcoming Loremaster's Guide for it's D&D 5E Adventures in Middle Earth. The art is by Ralph Horsley. Cubicle 7 says it's hoping for a PDF release of the book by the end of December, but that the holiday season might push it into January. "The Loremaster's Guide is packed with extra setting material and advice for running Adventures in Middle-earth. There are expanded rules and guidance for running Journeys, Audiences, new rules for combat and adversaries, and a whole lot more." The Player's Guide was released in November.
On eBay, a seller called editorjan is selling an original woodgrain box D&D set from 1974. That's the good news. The bad news is that, with four days left on the auction, it's currently sitting at an eye-watering $5,600! "Yes, the "granddaddy of them all". Published by Tactical Studies Rules, a fledgling company (at the time) of Gary Gygax, Don Kaye, and Brian Blume. The game is based on the fantasy portion of the earlier Chainmail rules, and also requires the Outdoor Survival war game (by Avalon Hill) to play. Original D&D Set (woodgrain box) by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson Contains three booklets (Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, Underworld & Wilderness Adventures) plus a Reference Sheets booklet. The Reference Sheets booklet (actually just loose pages stapled together), was exclusively available in the Original D&D Set. Nearly every set we've heard about has a booklet with varying pages, from 6 to 12; as far as we know, each printing has the same info, only differing in format and number of pages. The set was first printed in late January 1974, and very likely was not publicly available until the second quarter of 1974."
The public playtest for Modiphius' Star Trek Adventures tabletop RPG has launched worldwide with over 5,000 players in a storyline penned by writers including Dayton Ward (NYT bestselling author) and Scott Pearson. The living campaign will run until mid-2017, when the core rulebook is released, taking place in the unexplored Shackleton Expanse near Starbase 364. Different playtest experiences are available depending on which group playtesters signed up for, with different groups focusing on combat, diplomacy, and so on.
