CB's The Sunless Citadel v3.5

Karl finds the wooden door to be neither locked nor trapped. After carefully and silently listening for sounds of life coming from the other side, Karl finds he does hear the occasional scrabbling of small rodents but nothing else save perhaps the tinkle of water.

Karl shrugs slightly at the others and draws his sword. He makes eye contact with everyone . . . save Elyan, to warn them, and then quietly eases the door open.

Quietly easing open the wooden door, Karl peers into an inky black room. His orc blood once again allows him to view things quite handily. Like so many of the other rooms in this old citadel, dust and odd bits of stony debris and rubble lie scattered on the floor. An ornate fountain is built into the eastern wall. Though cracked, stained, and dry, the fountain's carving of a diving dragon retains its beauty. An archway with a graceful inscription chiseled into the bulwark overhead stands along the southern wall of the chamber. Peering past the arch into the small room beyond, Karl spots a series of cots with three backpacks resting on the floor. Two of the packs are sized for small creatures and are torn and filthy. The third looks to be larger, intended for someone more akin to a human and is decently clean.

To the north, Karl spots a second archway. Unlike its twin to the south, this arch has no inscription overhead and leads not to one open room but to a narrow hall off of which cell doors branch. From his vantage point, Karl is unable to determine how many cell doors there are in all, though the two he can see are both open.

After a few quiet moments spent looking and taking in the features of the rooms behind the wooden door, Karl is hit by one salient fact. Despite the fountain inset along the eastern wall being dry, the sound of tinkling water resounds in soft echoes, filling the chamber with a drowsy lullaby effect.

Kaeleen : Female Elf Cleric of Corellon Larethian 2

Kaeleen sticks close to Elyan since she can't see a thing in the darkness. She thought how nice a lantern would be about now.

To the north, a series of six cell doors line an arrow-straight hall of mortared stone. Five of the doors stand open but a sixth is closed. The north hall has its terminus in a larger room containing a second, larger fountain than the one to the south. Peering through the dark, Grotzkoshter makes out a cobblestone floor containing two trapdoors blocked open by iron spikes. It's obvious that if the tops of the trapdoors were flush with the floor, they would be difficult to spot. The large fountain in the northernmost room is carved in elaborate bas-relief dragons.

Karl makes out a pair of torches, both of them partially used and unlit, in sconces on the wall by the fountain to the south.

"There's someone down that way," says the bard quietly, "and it sounds like they're hurt. Come on, let's find them!"

He has Rogue guide him towards the sound.

Karl puts out a hand to tap Elyan on the shoulder. He whispers to the bard, loud enough for the others to hear, but hopefully not enough to carry further.

"Wait. Light."

If the bard stops, Karl will quietly hurry to the nearest of the two torches and return with it for those members of the party that aren't half-orc or blind.
