This week, I look at some of the RPG crowdfunding projects that end between March 6th and the 12th. While ZineQuest 2 continues, its volume has turned down from tidal flood to manageable flow, allowing me to go back and pick up a few quickstarters I missed. At the same time, there are a few non-RPG products that have RPG ties (a video game and some minifigures) that are worth checking out.
We previously discussed how The Witcher may have been inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, concluding that although author Andrzej Sapkowski may have seen a tabletop role-playing game, he never played a RPG. We now know that's untrue. Why? Because Sapkowski wrote one.
The Kickstarter for the new Pathfinder video game is now live and rocketing towards funding (it made $100K in the first hour or so). It describes itself as "A new isometric single-player RPG set in the Pathfinder universe – an indirect sequel to Pathfinder: Kingmaker." It's based on Pathfinder 1st Edition, with an added "strategic layer" of gameplay allowing you to lead armies. For $28 you...
Wizards of the Coast announced they are forming a new video game studio called Archetype Entertainment headed by former BioWare developers James Ohlen and Chad Robertson.
Star Control: Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict, Volume IV or just simply Star Control was a science fiction video game developed by Toys for Bob and published by Accolade in 1990. Star Control was primarily a simple space exploration and combat game, but its sequel is widely viewed today as one of the greatest PC games ever made. At least some of the credit for the game's goes to the...
Owlcat Studios is following up its Kingmaker video game with another Pathfinder adventure path: Wrath of the Righteous. This one has you recruiting armies and fighting demon hordes.
An announcement trailer for Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance premiered at The Game Awards on Thursday evening. Developed by Tuque Games, the studio acquired earlier this year by Wizards of the Coast, the game will be a sequel of sorts in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance action-RPG series for the Xbox, Playstation 2, and Gamecube. This game, however, will go to Icewind Dale and feature...
As Thanksgiving approaches in the U.S. it's a great time to consider how our purchases can help fellow creators. These three charities are a great place to start.
Fortnite launched two new features for its battle royale game in its eleventh season, matchmaking and bots. The two features are important lessons on how players perceive status of other characters and how they can be fooled -- a lesson most game masters know is not easy to pull off in a tabletop game.

WotC New WotC Game Studio Headed By Bioware's James Ohlen

Ex-Bioware designer James Ohlen is in the news a lot right now! He’s behind the Odyssey of the Dragonlords Kickstarter, the new Heroes of Baldur’s Gate hardcover, and is now also heading up a studio for WotC! OH MY G- It’s not a D&D project though. It’s original IP of some kind. *closes tab*

Warriors of Waterdeep: New Free to Play D&D Mobile Game Coming Soon

Once again instead of making a really good CRPG based on 5th edition, they do a gimmicky game trying to cash in on a fad for a quick buck. Meanwhile Pathfinder: Kingmaker seems really awesome, aka the model for gaming that WotC should have been looking at.

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

Interesting. I look forward to seeing what comes of this - some thrilling ideas, no doubt, but I'm keeping myself reserved so as not to be let down should those thrilling ideas be brought into less-than-thrilling existence.
Matt Sprange has posted The State of the Mongoose, the yearly address covering what is going on behind the scenes at Mongoose Publishing. Highlights include a new way of doing business, a new skirmish game set in the ancient word, a 3D WWII dogfighting miniatures game, a new look for the Traveller RPG, the new edition of Paranoia, miniatures for Judge Dredd, plus some news about video games.
