GREYHAWK CY963 GOLDEN ERA CAMPAIGN: HEROES OF DYVERS: CHAPTER 4

If we are going to do this we should do it already. If we are discovered here it will go poorly for us. Allow me an attempt to fascinate them with a song. If all goes well I may be able to suggest that they return to camp and leave us be. At the very least I may be able to give us opportunity to catch them off guard.
Lathir looks at Sylvar.
"Prepare your song my friend, I am ready for this. I will prepare the sky for the lightning show. You should play from as far back here as you can be effective. Everyone else should back up some as well. I am hoping Sylvar can force them to come to us.

Since I am in disguise, I do not care if they see me first. I will be bait if it comes to it

Sylvar readies his Lute given his level he can only fascinate three creatures. He will attempt to fascinate the ones who appear to be in charge, given what he knows about Hill Giants, Trolls and Orcs. Sylvar steps out into the open and begins playing a complex tune on his lute as he makes his way across the canyon bottom.

Where will you go to find a maiden fair
Down to the river
Down to the river
Where will you go to find the freshest drink
Down to the river
Down to the river
Where will you go to find a mother's care
Down to the river
Down to the river

The river
The river
The sweetest rest you'll find there
The maiden fair, if you're quick you'll get a kiss
The sweetest drink, if you're wise you'll thirst no more
A mother's care, if you're lucky she'll treat you well
At the river
At the river
At the river

Sylvar Perform check: 33

There is no need to speak the creature's language for the purposes of Fascinate.

OOC:
"...I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can’t expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free."

Surprise, DUDES!

GM:

Hill Giant #1 Will Save = 15 + 4 = 19 (Fail)
Hill Giant #2 Will Save = 20 + 4 = 24 (Natural 20 Always Saves)
Troll #1 Will Save = 20 + 3 = 23 (Natural 20 Always Saves)

The Hill Giant who failed was the overall group leader. The Hill Giant who made his save is his second-in-command.

As Sylvar steps out into the open, the group notices him, and a murmur of surprise and confusion sweeps through them; they clearly did not expect to see this.

Their leader, the largest of the two Hill Giants, cocks his head to the left, as the intoxicating music takes hold of his mind. His arms go limp, and he drops his massive Greatclub to the ground, as he stands there, listening, totally enraptured. The other Hill Giant and one of the Trolls both try to say something, but he shushes them, muttering something in the Giant tongue.

[sblock=For Dewydd, and all other party members who speak Giant]
"Be quiet, you knuckleheads, I wanna hear this!"
[/sblock]

The red Orcs look at each other, shrugging in confusion, as they notice two of their own kind (Thallok, and Lathir who is disguised) among Sylvar's group. The Ogres ask the Orcs something, and the other Troll silently scratches his head in wonderment.

[sblock=If you speak Orcish]
"What in the Nine Hells is all of this happy, horse-sh*t? Who are those two guys? And what are they doing with those Demis?"
[/sblock]

GM:
Round One was a surprise round;
Lathir completed his casting of Call Lightning; if he desires to do so, he can strike the Troll NOW, at the end of the surprise round, with a bolt of lightning.

Weather conditions (light rain) are such that the lightning bolts will inflict 3d10 pts. of damage each.

If Lathir chooses to strike at the end of the surprise round, Sylvar's song will be disrupted.

EVERYONE: We are about to start round two; as of yet, none of your opponents have initiated combat. What do you do?

Sylvar suggests (in Orcish) to the Hill Giant...everyone else will enjoy my music more if they gather closer together...it's such a fine song...no one should miss it.

GM:
Since the Hill Giant is in command of Orcish troops, it makes sense that he would speak Orcish.

GM:
+250 xp for such an excellently worded Suggestion. Well done.

Consider this a backlog to the story line.

Sylvar looks intently in Tam's eyes. If you betray us or leave us to be slaughtered by these foul beasts I will get my vengeance, whether in this life or the next...Odin the All Father is my witness...there will be no rest for you. S

Tam-Tam, eyes wide with shock (and a little bit of terror), tries to splutter a response, then shakes his head as he looks to the ground. He begins quietly, but his voice gets stronger, even in his careful whisper:

"Sylvar, I owe you, Respen, Dewydd and all the rest a great debt. Though I may have a disreputable occupation, by some people's viewpoint, and hold no truck to specific laws, I still have a personal code from my business days that will not, cannot, allow me to betray those who have taken me in as a compatriot and partner in this endeavor."

He then stares boldly and firmly into Sylvar's eyes. "I do not expect you to trust my honor as a rogue and vagabond adventure; but, upon my family's name, as a halfling of some credibility, I swear that I would not betray any of you of my own free will."

He then pulls his bow out, and adds:

"I actually like Lathir's plan better. I can shoot using the bend of rock and earth as a cover. I can harry the Hill Giants in hopes of making their attempts less effective. Kind of like a constantly stinging mosquito, or a swarm of stirges."

Tam-Tam then politely waits for a response and for what the others, who he considers as the leaders of this party, decide.

Lathir/Orc shaman walks across to the opposite side of the ravine. He turns as if listening intently to the bard's song. He is really gauging spacing. He delays in releasing a bolt since he can perform other actions without losing the call lightning.

If the enemy does indeed close together more, he will cast flame strike, feeling no remorse for the surprise attack. If the duped party splits off, he will move toward those uneffected, allowing the charmed ones to pass him by. He will shakes his head, as if at their stupidity, and continue through the enemy party. When on the other side he will loose his first bolt at a remaining troll or orc if no remaining troll.

Vale Buffs The Party

~ I have a bad feeling about this...~

Getting as close to the enemy as possible without coming out where Thallok and Lathir are, Vale whispers his prayer to the Dwarven pantheon, particularly to Clangeddin Silverbeard, to grant favor to Vale's allies and against the Giants, Trolls, and Orcs.

"Hear my prayers! Honor these honorable souls, even Thallok, as we smite these Giants and their company. Good bests Evil!"

OOC: Vale casts prayer on the group. Per spell description, it lasts 6 rounds, positing +1 bonus to all allied attacks, saves, or skill checks, and a -1 penalty to all enemy attacks, saves, or skill checks.

Thallok:
Thallok says "While I could have disguised you as my prisoner, I think Lathir's idea is the better. I will stand back a bit and wait for the lightning show."

Kleborn:
Kleborn thinking about all options says "I think this is the best course of action, I am not sure I like going headfirst into a group of giants, orcs, and ogres. If this does not work we must be prepared for a battle." As he says this he steps back with Thallok, he draws his sword.

And so, it begins... AGAIN.

GM:
You can't make it completely to the other side of the ravine, without placing yourself at an extreme disadvantage. I have placed you as close as you dare to get; and even so, you are within reach of Troll No. 1, should things go south.

GM:
Lathir does NOT unleash lightning during the surprise round. This allows Sylvar to use Suggestion. Sylvar, your Suggestion spell has a base DC of 17. Since your suggestion is reasonable, I am giving you a +2 bonus, for a total DC of 19. The Giant rolls 18, failing his save. He obeys your suggestion. The Orcs readily obey the Leader Giant, and gather more closely. The Ogres and Trolls, who are still confused by what is happening, shuffle around a bit, grumbling and complaining, eyeing Lathir cautiously as he approaches. They do not huddle up, but they do move a little.

GM: New Map, with corrected positioning for Lathir, as per our phone conversation. The yellow squares represent the area-of-effect for the Flame Strike spell.

At the end of this round, after the monsters shuffle around, Lathir takes his delayed action.

Lathir said:

GM:
Flame Strike:
Damage Inflicted: 29 pts.;
Reflex Save vs. DC 20 for half damage.
Troll 1: 9
Troll 2: 15
Giant 2: 6
Ogre 2: 15
Ogre 3: 12
Ogre 4: 1 (Critical Fail); Takes max damage (6x8= 48) and items are destroyed.

Ogre 4 is dead; Ogres 2 & 3 are unconcious.

Troll 1: 29 pts. damage
Troll 2: 29 pts. damage
Giant 2: 29 pts. damage

As the monsters finish shuffling, a column of fire slams down from the heavens, laying waste to the rear half of the war party!
